The Cammeraygal and the Eora nation
Wollstonecraft is a harbourside suburb on Sydney's lower North Shore, roughly four kilometres from the city's central business district. It is in New South Wales, in the North Sydney Council local government area, and it lies on the traditional lands of the Cammeraygal, of the Eora nation.
Edward Wollstonecraft and the land grant
Wollstonecraft is named after Edward Wollstonecraft, the first settler in the area to receive a land grant. He received 500 acres (200 hectares) in 1821. He had left England to build a fortune for himself and Elizabeth, his sister, and to get away from the reputation of his aunt, Mary Wollstonecraft, who wrote A Vindication of the Rights of Woman.
Alexander Berry and Berry Island
Another prominent resident in the area was Alexander Berry, Edward Wollstonecraft's business associate. Berry Island is named after him. It is a harbour-side location in Wollstonecraft.
